Queer intimacy in art has a history either of misrepresentation or taboo in mainstream media. Often, these relationships are reduced to stereotypical portrayals or sensationalised for shock value. Such depictions fail to capture the nuanced and diverse experience of queer individuals.
Artists, in this context, face a great challenge in subverting the harmful portrayals. But this also means they’re treading the faint line against censorship and backlash. The audience, regardless of how artistically evolved they’ve become, can still be less receptive to emotions that are explicitly placed before them in an artwork. The artists, nevertheless, must find ways to represent queer intimacy authentically and not yield to the harmful stereotypes that have, for long, been rampant in art.
Overcoming these allows artists to create work that beautifully challenges societal norms and celebrates the beauty and complexity of queer love. And this is what Zoey Chang, the Taiwanese artist, has achieved by finding her place in the London art scene.
The Beginning

Chang started her journey as an artist when she was just seven, but not in the typical way. She recalls being the annoying kid in class, destroying her ceramic teacher’s demonstration sculptures with toothpicks. One might say destruction is also art and maybe this was the right stepping stone for Chang. But soon enough, she began finding an increasing interest in ceramics, so much so that it became her “first obsession.” Chang did not just stop at ceramics. She experimented with different media like oil painting and the traditional Japanese watercolour.
In the pursuit of honing her skills, she completed two degrees in art, including an MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art, London. Her current obsession, far from ceramics, is real life documentation of intimacy between couples.
The Evolution of Zoey Chang Art
Chang is not new to tackling intimacy in her artwork. She started in university where she moulded her art as a tool that allowed her to explore different expressions of intimacy and female sexual liberation. These include the role of objectification in erotic material, voyeurism, and the relation between kink and early life experiences. Her treatment of art, therefore, is not unidimensional. She looks at her subject from different edges and nooks, making sure that the storytelling that unfolds through her art is not put to the chain by mainstream thinking. Right now, Zoey Chang is focused on the process of transformation and reflection, as these get shaped by the stories and experiences she accumulates through life drawing. Her strongest suit through all this is her commitment to practise.
A Visual Exploration of Intimacy

Chang’s recent work consists of life drawings and oil paintings that focus on human intimacy. She also tries sculpting to capture belonging and queer intimacy in a different media. Being the mixed media artist that she is, Zoey Chang can fluidly move from one canvas to the other without scare.
She reaches out to couples online who are willing to have their intimacy documented by her. When she’s invited to their bedrooms, she gets a glimpse of their intimate lives which are in itself a celebration of relationships that transcend definition. She records the beauty of this, extracting the celebratory spirit onto her canvas.
The inspiration for this new practice of painting came to Chang when she first moved to London five years ago. She discovered, in her own words, “a whole rainbow of possibilities” when it came to healthy relationships and love. These did not prescribe to any traditional depictions nor were they constrained in their love or intimacy by such depictions.
From Abstraction to Realism
Zoey Chang’s artwork explores the intersections of gender identity and intimacy, often challenging traditional patriarchal perspectives. She traverses a spectrum of artistic expression, from abstract compositions that resemble intimacy to direct portrayals of couples in intimate moments. This breadth allows for a comprehensive exploration of her themes, from abstract to representational art.
Her visual language also reflects the challenge of categorising objects or individuals within standardised descriptions. She seeks to demystify the notions surrounding intimacy through her art.
